Magnesium-based composites for transport applications

Transport industry is eager to incorporate lightweight materials to decrease fuel consumption and associated emissions. Magnesium is one of the most promising candidates for such applications as it is the lightest structural metal but the performance of conventional magnesium alloys must be improved in terms of corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and mechanical strength. A KMMVIN collaborative internal project was launched to develop and characterise magnesium based composites produced both by open pore preform infiltration and stir casting of TiC particulate reinforced AZ91. The summary of this collaborative effort that comprised tasks related to optimization of the production processes, microstructure analysis, measurement of mechanical properties and modelling activities is provided.
